“Hooray! It’s the weekend!” A little boy cried as he ran out the front doors of his small elementary school. The bell marking the end of school had just rung; and the children were walking, although most were running, out of the school. Many of them eagerly started home to their parents, but a few stayed behind to chat with their friends.

First Encounter

I first started seeing him a little after I turned six years old. I had been sitting in my wheelchair in my back yard with a wooden board stretched out on my lap. I was using it as a desk to draw on. My pencils were in a little tin soup can and my paper was piled neatly next to them on the surface in front of me. You lie still, staring up at the shadowy ceiling. Two bloodied, skinless human hands hang in one dark corner, the thick clouds of ash obscuring their owner, but you are unfazed. An alarm wails in the distance, turned into calming music by a chorus of shouts and gunfire. At the far side of the containment chamber, someone shifts and groans in pain.
You are a D-Class at Foundation Site 19. By now, you are used to being thrust into surreal, deadly situations, but this one is different. There are no intercom voices guiding you and keeping you calm. There are no shotgun-toting, riot-armored guards waiting in the wings. This is no longer a test. Something has gone very, very wrong. The rats have chewed through the lock on their proverbial cage, and the men in charge forgot to bait the traps.
Hell is breaking loose.
Self-preservation eventually forces you to your feet, where you take stock of the situation.

Most tiresome and scintillating pathways
Toward endlessly intoxicating lights,
